FO: A Pair of Stovetop Hats

baby stovetop

I made a hat, and the pattern was so nice, I knit it twice! One in baby size, and one adult large size. The baby size fits Erin, so fits more like toddler, and the adult large size is nice and slouchy even on my large noggin.

The baby size is knit from some yarn that I bought in Boston probably....almost 10 years ago?? Not even sure how long ago--I know it was toward the beginning of my time living in NYC, so probably 2005 or 2006, while visiting Jessica in Boston, I think.

The adult hat is knit from alpaca yarn from a local alpaca farm down in Fife. As one would expect from alpaca, it's delightfully soft, and VERY warm. Too warm for me. Because this yarn is a bit special, I'll probably put this in the gift pile (vs the donate pile), and hopefully it'll find a home with some large headed person in a cooler climate.

Another note on this yarn: the color bled and faded after a soak, which was a bit of a bummer, but the resulting color is still pleasant.

FO: Kitty Hat

Kitty hat
ravelry project page

Made this hat for Erin back in July, knit almost entirely while camping. Fun to make and fun result--win win!

Knit as written, though I did add a couple extra rows in the section between the ears. The yarn is Manos del Uraguay--wonderfully soft.

FO: Little Shells Hat

little shells hat

Changed things up a bit and did some crochet back in July. This yarn seemed well suited to the pattern, and used up one complete ball, with just a few inches left over! A good hat for fall/spring.

FO: My First Brioche Hat

Happy to have finished my brioche hat yesterday on the way home from our little Labor Day trip up to Vancouver. As I mentioned, brioche stitch is a bit slow going for me, but I definitely feel like I have the hang of it now and am ready to tackle other brioche projects in the future.

I am not too pleased with the crown decreases. I wish the pattern used a neater way of doing them--I think a center double decrease would be better than the k3tog. But I didn't feel like trying out an alternative method, so oh well.

This hat is very warm. Too warm for me. But I think it would be nice for someone who is outside all the time--it's destined for the donate pile.

And, note to self: the yarn, Berocco Vintage, was a joy to work with!

FO: Bulky Hat

Whipped up this quick hat using cascade 220 superwash held double. Stash buster!! Gave it to the kid of the family with whom we watched the Superbowl. Used this free pattern from Purl Bee, knit the woman size--came out a bit short for my taste but fit the kid well. The big ass pompom is definitely my favorite thing. :)

FO: Lucky 7 Hat

A relatively quick, fun knit hat, knit out of Dream in Color Classy in "purple rain," a lovely, subtly variegated dark purple. With the ribbing, this hat could stretch to fit a large child's head through a small adult head. Knit almost exactly as written, see details on ravelry

Three hats!

Three hats done toward my #15in15 goal!

Top left is Bronntanas, a Ysolda pattern, knit in Malabrigo worsted. After reading comments of other knitters on ravelry who said the hats came out too big, I knit the adult small size expecting a larger hat...well it seems more like a true adult small to me. :) or even a child sized hat. This one goes into the gift/donate pile.

Top right is a hat I improvised (see details on my rav project page). I had the purple lambs pride that I wanted to use up, so I just knit the ribbing until I finished it--makes for a good folded brim. Then I used small balls of white and noro to knit the mosaic pattern. The mosaic pattern looks a bit sloppy, even after blocking,, which is disappointing. Another one for the gift/donate pile.

Bottom is a garter ear flap hat that I modified to have a rounder crown. This is the adult small size, though it does fit my large head. I did a short I cord at the top and a small tassel at the end. Another one for the gift/donate pile.

FO: Hermione [hearts] Ron

Hermione [hearts] Ron Hat

Yarn: Berroco Ultra Alpaca
Needle: US3 and US6
Pattern: Hermione Hearts Ron (ravelry project page)

Hermione [hearts] Ron Hat

Another movie-inspired knit! I remember seeing this hat in the movie and thinking it wouldn't be hard to re-create. Thankfully, someone else did the work! Though I did modify the crown decreases significantly (details on the ravelry page).

Hermione [hearts] Ron Hat

Not the first finished object of 2012, but the first one that's been photodocumented. :) This hat was a quick, fun knit. My hands did cramp a bit using the US3s for the brim, but I'm so happy with the result, it was worth it. The yarn is left over from a scarf I made for Tracie P.B. (pre-blog). This hat took nearly all of the 77g I had remaining. Yea for using yarn from the stash!

Rare to have a hat fit my large head so well! (I guess that's what comes of using larger yarn and needles than called for without decreasing the number of stitches cast on).

FO: Trilobite Hat

Trilobite Hat

Pattern: Trilobite from Knitty (rav project page)
Yarn: Malabrigo Rios

This was a delightful hat to knit from brim to crown! The yarn is a dream, the pattern is fun and the hat fits me perfectly! I did modify the pattern a bit, based on some people's notes on Ravelry. I added a total of 7 rows to the hat; I also used one needle size larger than called for.

This would be a great hat pattern for your biology- or fossil-loving friends. And I definitely recommend this yarn for hats or any other winter accessories.

FO: Replacement Hat

Gray Beret

Pattern: Beckett Beret (rav link)
Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-Ease

Once upon a time, I knit my sisters slouchy hats. Then one sister had an infestation of some sort of horrible bug and had to hastily wash everything in her possession...including the lovely wool slouch hat, which came out itty bitty. Cue her request for a replacement hat. This time, I knit it out of washable yarn.

Gray Beret

This pattern had enough of a pattern to keep it interesting, while still remaining simple. I modified the pattern a bit--I cast on fewer stitches (96), I went up one needle size after the ribbing. If I knit this design again, I'll modify it further--the top of it came out annoyingly pointy. The pattern calls for two plain knit rows between decrease rows at the top, but I would knit only one plain round for a less pointy top. I would also go up another needle size for the body to give the fabric better drape. Melisa seemed to like it enough, though.
